Zookeepers at South Australia’s Adelaide Zoo released video on March 1 of an eight-week-old baby penguin who is thriving under the care of surrogate parents. In this video, the young little penguin, who is not yet named, chows down on a fishy meal. The chick was hatched by a pair of little penguins named Daquiri and Tux, after its biological parents proved to be inadequate egg-sitters. “We decided to swap the egg from Sticky Beak and Brioche out and popped it under Tux and Daquiri, which has resulted in our lovely chick,” zookeeper Amelia Kennett said in a press release. Ten-year-old Daquiri and five-year-old Tux were very attentive to the egg, and a healthy fluffy chick hatched, bringing the colony numbers to 21. The chick will venture out into the zoo’s pool once it has lost all of its down feathers and its waterproof adult feathers have come in. Little penguins, also known as fairy penguins, are the smallest species of penguin in the world, growing to about 12 inches (30 cm) in height. They are found in the coastal waters of Australia and New Zealand, and their colonies can range in number from just a couple of pairs to thousands, according to the zoo.
