Dramatic footage showed fire crews tackling a fire at a fertilizer plant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Monday night; evacuation alerts were issued to around 6,000 people living within one mile of the plant on Tuesday, February 1. Officials warned residents of the potential for a large explosion to occur due to an estimated 500 tons of ammonium nitrate on site. Firefighters said on Tuesday that the fire became an explosive hazard when a rail car adjacent to the facility became involved.
