Just one week on from Will Smith’s Oscars slap, it looks like we can expect plenty of jokes at his expense at today’s Grammy Awards.
After a two-month postponement caused by yet another wave of Covid-19, the 64th annual Grammy Awards is finally upon us.
The ceremony, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas today (airing from 10am AEDT on Seven), will see the biggest names in the music industry go head-to-head for the opportunity to take home a Grammy.
Before that, stars including Dua Lipa dazzled on the Grammys red carpet.
And of course there’s a healthy smattering of Will Smith jokes during the first major award show to be held since the actor’s shocking Oscars smackdown last week.
Host Trevor Noah opened the show promising that viewers could expect a fun show: “We’re going to be singing, we’re going to be dancing, we’re going to be keeping people’s names out of our mouths,” he said, giving the camera a wry smile as he paraphrased Will Smith’s now-infamous words to Chris Rock last week.
Minutes later, musician Questlove took to the stage to present an award. Questlove was the unfortunate winner of the award Chris Rock had been presenting at the Oscars, and had his big moment thoroughly upstaged by Smith. He told the Grammys audience: “I’m going to present this award, and I trust you people stay 500ft away from me.”
In fact, the jokes started early in a pre-televised portion of the ceremony, with comedian Nate Bargatze taking to the stage to present an award – wearing an oversized safety helmet.
“They said comedians had to wear these now at award shows, during the joke parts,” Bargatze explained of the helmet.
Meanwhile, Jon Batiste is the most-nominated artist at today’s Grammys with a whopping 11 nods across seven fields – while Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H. E. R are tied for second most-nominated with eight each.
Tying in third are Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo with eight nominations each.
Aussie teen star The Kid Laroi is up for Best New Artist, and is also listed on the credits for Justin Bieber’s Justice, which is in the running for Album of the Year.
But there are only a handful of major awards left to be handed out at today’s televised ceremony, with the majority of gongs already awarded at the pre-event.
Here are all the nominees in the major categories, updated with the winners as they’re announced:
