Installing Tubs and Basins is a Professional Job not DIY

Sometimes when things go wrong around the home, if you have the tools and some DIY skills, it is possible to save some money and handle repairs yourself. But that is more fixing a shelf or putting back on a cabinet door. Messing with the plumbing in your home is not only not recommended, it is not allowed here in Australia. Whether it is a bathtub installation, or some other plumbing work, you need to find a reliable and skilled professional plumber to handle the job. Here is a look at what the process of a tub installation looks like and why a licensed plumber is required.

Tubs and Basins Installations

A whole basin installation is best left to a licensed plumber. Perhaps you are just replacing the sinks in the bathroom, maybe it has cracked, or perhaps you are considering a whole bathroom renovation. There are a number of reasons, you with less experience are more likely to accidentally damage the new basin trying to put it in. There are water supply lines to connect correctly and there are the drain lines as well as the pipes to line up correctly. If you get it wrong you end up with a slow leak and that can cause damage that could be costly to repair.

The same is true for a bathtub installation. Moving, taking out and replacing the whole thing is definitely best for a plumber to handle. It is the best option to protect your bathroom, the new things you have bought and your bank balance should something go wrong if you did not use a professional licensed plumber!

Steps to installing a new bathtub

The following steps are those that your plumber will likely follow or something along these lines.

  1. On the subfloor they will spread mortar to a thickness of about 50mm.
  2. With help they will then place the tub into position ensuring it is level.
  3. Then the flange needs to be secured to the wall studs.
  4. Using their skill and knowledge they correctly and safely connect the water supply pipes and drain pipes.
  5. Taking the drain they seat it in the bathtub using plumber’s putty, then press it in and tighten.
  6. The hot water and cold water taps go onto the water supply pipe fittings. The plumber will make sure there is no leak by sealing the threads as they are tightened.
  7. Then they can screw on each cold and hot water handle.
  8. If there are any other fixtures that need putting back in that is next.
  9. Then they turn it all on and check everywhere for drips and leaks.
  10. They also triple check the drain is working properly and not leaking.
