A heroic pet owner who became trapped in the River Torrens after jumping in to save his dog has been rescued in an intricate operation.
A passer-by noticed the man and the dog down an embankment near Moorfield Tce and Hallet Boulevard at Allenby Gardens just after 9am Wednesday and raised the alarm.
It is understood the dog was chasing ducks that were swimming in the river before it jumped in, and the owner soon followed to save it.
The man did not realise the water was more than 2m deep, and was lucky to find a log at the bottom of the river to stand on to keep himself and his pet above water.
Fire crews attended with the assistance of police, and provided a ladder along the side of the concrete embankment so the man could hand rescuers his dog, before climbing out of the river himself.
The man and his dog were not harmed in the incident.
The rescue operation took less than an hour.
