Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s pledge to expand the Australian Defence Force by 30 per cent by 2040 will be the biggest expansion to the ADF in 40 years.
Political reporter Trudy McIntosh said it will be a big feature if the current government is “still there to actually follow through on this promise.”
She said the increasing strategic threats to the region have Labor bipartisan in their support for the need for more troops.
“The election is the crucial backdrop for this announcement. There’s no doubt the prime minister is keen to keep the focus on national security. He believes this is an area where the coalition has a better record than Labor,” she said.
