It took less than one day before parliament backtracked on its promise to phase out late nights and stressful working conditions in another example of politicians failing to live up to their promises, according to Sky News host Chris Kenny.
Both sides of politics agreed to the 28 recommendations made by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins to improve parliamentary workplaces.
The 450-page report recommended parliament’s drinking culture be addressed, and its sitting calendar be amended to ensure late nights do not occur.
Yet, less than a day after Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese responded to the report, parliament sat all night to debate the Coalition’s religious discrimination bill.
“Those recommendations 27 and 28 in the Jenkins report are aimed precisely at eliminating all night, boozy sittings, and all that can flow from them,” Mr Kenny said.
“There was bipartisan agreement on committing to those recommendations and backslapping about cultural change on Tuesday, but parliament was back to its old self the very next day.
“And they wonder.”
